[This letter appears on Tyl's desk late Friday evening, materializing slowly even as Tyl watches. It is folded and sealed with wax, but not addressed on the outside.] This is very serious, Tyl. I'm asking Glossaria to transport this directly to you so there is no possibility of it being intercepted. If any hands other than yours touch this paper, it will read as nothing more than a routine and uninteresting letter. It is frustrating to be without my magic at such a time, but we will make do as best we can. In any case, having taken what precautions I can, let me speak plainly: I don't follow Guild politics closely, but I'm not sure I've even heard of this person, but he's a fraud in any rate by signing himself as "headmaster" - The Wizard's Guild is headed by a council, not a single man! He may be on the council and signing this way in order to represent himself as stronger than he is, but in any case he is misrepresenting himself. As for his allegations, I am deeply concerned. The Hall, as you may know, is extremely strongly warded against prying eyes. Divination is a field in which I enjoy great success, and since the MeadeHall is a place holy to me, I strengthened its already considerable wards when I came to understand its significance. I don't understand how anyone could gain enough understanding of what goes on within its confines as to gain even a suspicion of Viscount Truesilver's unfortunate death. Lisl, as well, goes to great pains to disguise her nature - as well as did Moon Dancer, before his disappearance. The mention of lycanthropes most certainly astonishes me. (Please tell me the Purple Dragons gave no credence to these ravings!) I have no idea what he means by assassins, unless he counts Jelarthna's admittedly over-hasty reaction to the Viscount. I am left with only two possible answers: First, that there is a spy of some sort in the Hall. That, in and of itself, would be completely preposterous if it weren't for the absurdity of the second possibility, which is that Nilgarthor posesses, either in himself or in some ally, psionic abilities, and is skilled enough in their use to pluck these things directly from our minds. (Which, come to think of it, might explain his desire to run you out of town before he is unearthed.) I urge you again to come and see me at the Tower tomorrow where we can talk frankly without fear of being overheard. I suggest you destroy this letter when you are done reading it, despite the enchantments upon it. Thank you for your inquiring into my ordeal, but I had already begun the ritual when your letter was delivered, and I did not receive it until this afternoon. It left me physically weak and magically inert. I assure you, both conditions are temporary - my strength should return in a matter of days, the magic in a week or so. You can assist me best by coming to visit - Lisl is threatening to bring her mother to care for me! I should close; my nursemaids are glaring at this effort, and I still must walk Glossaria through the transportation spell. --Zoya |
