Bai sat in the library reading a book as the figure approached him from behind and placed his fingers against Bai's back. "It would be so easy to kill you Bai. Too easy."

"Great. Go scheme somewhere else Palyres."

"Oh but why? You're far more entertaining. One upstart little human who thinks he can command the gods." Palyres walked around the table, his footsteps completely silent in the echoing chamber. "I don't intend to kill you Bai. I intend to teach you your place."

Bai leaned back in his chair and looked at Palyres, "You've been saying that for nearly a decade now. If you're not prepared to back it up with action don't bother repeating it."

Palyres drew one of his rapiers and slipped it through the spine of Bai's book, lifting it off the table and examining it. "Oh please Bai, you actually think this is going to help you. It's not like you have a chance. I mean, Jaret's mortal, but he's still two or three times the man you are. I'd introduce myself to her, but really, there wouldn't be any challenge in it, and besides, I think this does a far better job of showing you everything that you're not." Palyres dropped the book back on the table with a thud.

Bai looked at Palyres with a bored expression, "Any other pearls of wisdom you'd care to impart?"

"Oh, you are in a snit. But as a matter of fact I do. I want to know what misguided hope you're clinging to. I know you're pathetic, but honestly, you have an entire pantheon preparing to smite you, and still you dally, hoping that your dark elf lover will return to you. You're not that stupid, you're doing this for a reason. I want to know what that reason is." Palyres' brown eyes bored directly into Bai's blue eyes.

"If you'd ever been in love you'd understand my motivations perfectly Palyres."

"Oh please! You expect me to believe that you've gone through all of this for nearly a decade out of love. If you wanted love you'd have wooed some farm girl years ago and been done with it."

Bai shook his head, "You're confusing lust and love Palyres. If you haven't learned the difference by now you need to go have a chat with your mother."

Palyres perched on the edge of the table, idly twirling his drawn rapier, "I'll make you a deal Bai. Tell me what your secret is, and I'll see to it that Jaret's employers keep him so busy that he won't have time to see your precious Lini'leah."

"It's not that easy Palyres. If it was I wouldn't have spent so many years scouring a dozen worlds looking for her."

Palyres shook his head, "So proud that you'll refuse my help in seducing a woman...Or a secret so dangerous you don't dare share it with me?"

Bai snorted, "If I got your help in seducing her we'd both wind up dead."

"Perhaps. Certainly she'd be reminded of what she's missing since she renounced a god's bed." Palyres smiled wickedly.

Bai looked steadily at Palyres, "You should probably leave before your reputation for never doing anything crude is tarnished."

Palyres smiled, "I'll leave Bai, but I will discover your secret. There's no way an unrefined mortal such as yourself could keep anything from me."

Bai leaned back in his chair as Palyres left, "Quite likely Palyres, quite likely."
