Getting the Girl

* Meghan is sitting at the kitchen table working. A few of Abby's toys and such are scattered around but the little girl is no where to be seen.

* Jaret makes his way down Marsember's streets, amiably nodding and greeting those he passes. Most are not in as light of a mood as Jaret is in, and quite often his acknowledgements go unanswered. He carries a small box at his side. He hops up the steps to Meghan's house and knocks on the door. "Meghan, are you in? It's Jaret."

* Meghan glances up and makes a note before standing and going to the door. She smiles lightly as she opens it up. "Hello Jaret. To what do I owe this pleasure?"

* Jaret holds out the box to Meghan. "A little something for Miss Abagail. Also, I thought I'd visit before departing, to say my farewells in person."

* Meghan nods and steps aside as she takes the box, then motions for him to enter. "Michelle has Abby, but I'll be sure to give her your gift when she gets back."

<Jaret> Most likely it's a gift for you, and Abby will be content with the box. It's a nice light summer dress. I thought she might like something of its kind once the weather heats up.

<Meghan> ::nods:: Very thoughtful. ::She sets the box aside on a table:: Can I get you something to drink?

<Jaret> Only if you get yourself something as well. If you do, I'll take whatever you have.

* Meghan nods and disappears into the kitchen. She returns a moment later with two glasses of cold tea, handing one to Jaret and then moving to sit. She motions to the empty chair. "So when do you go?"

<Jaret> In the next day or so. Michelle and Zoya had a few scholarly tasks they wished to complete before we left, and they're finished or almost now.

<Meghan> ::nods:: Well I hope you can go and come back quickly. Abby does miss you when you are gone for so long. ::she takes a drink from her tea::

<Jaret> As do we. The sooner we complete Azoun's task, the better for everyone. I hope that Orlann and Kevil will be able to do plenty to keep her occupied in my absence.

<Meghan> Well Kevil has his own children now. Orlann spends a lot more time with Tarri. ::She shakes her head a bit:: We'll be fine. Make do.

<Jaret> Well, do assure her I will hurry back as soon as I can. In the meanwhile, how have you been? Has Lord Taliesin been minding his manners?

<Meghan> ::she nods:: We've not seen much of each other recently. I've been busy with work and all. I am not completely sure what is taking up his time. ::She shrugs a bit and sips her tea:: It's as I expected I guess.

* Jaret raises an eyebrow. "As you expected? The implications of that statement are troubling."

<Meghan> ::she smiles a bit:: Let's just say it was enjoyable while it lasted. Trey was very insistent that we were simply friends. If something or someone else has gained his attentions it's understandable that he would spend less time around here.

<Jaret> Very well then. ::he sips his tea:: Have you talked with Tyl or Bluestar about Abby's abilities?

<Meghan> No not yet. Tyl has been busy and , well I am somewhat hesitant to take her to Bluestar after what happened at the Hall. I know I need to, but I want to give it a bit more time.

<Jaret> I think I heard about that... it probably would be better to take her to Tyl. She is the actual headmistress, after all.

<Meghan> ::nods:: Yes I was thinking the same thing. I assume she's going on this little trip with you all. I will speak to her when she returns.

<Jaret> Yes, she's coming along with us. ::he has some more of his tea, and sits quietly for a moment:: Well. Is there anything on your mind?

<Meghan> At the moment mostly things about the orphanage. ::smiles a bit:: Are you looking for something specific?

<Jaret> Nothing instantly springs to mind. I hoped to hear what sorts of things have been occupying your mind lately. Are you still enjoying your work at the orphanage?

<Meghan> ::She nods:: Yes. It helps keep me focused on something other than worrying about you, since you seem to be going off and getting yourself into near death situations a lot lately. That and it gives me something to do that makes me feel useful.

<Jaret> I'm glad you've found something you like to do. I'm sure many of those children will, over time, come to think of you as their new mother. And, although I'm sure you'll pay it no heed, the need to worry about me is slim. I'll always come back just fine.

* Meghan nods and sips her tea.

* Jaret has a bit more tea. "How are the children coping with the news from Arabel?"

<Meghan> It makes them nervous, of course. Some of the older children have been gathering information from around the city and coming back and telling the younger ones all sorts of things ::She sighs a bit:: It's amazing how unnoticed a child can go in the midst of an adult conversation.

<Jaret> And there's no telling what sorts of embellishments what the they've added to the stories, or what additions the stories had attached to them before the heard them.

* Meghan nods "Yes. It's hard enough trying to make the little ones understand that Orlann's stories are simply stories and not fact. Now this too."

<Jaret> Ah, I'd check with the good Corporal before all of his stories are dismissed in such a way. You never know what tall tale has a kernel of truth, or perhaps more, in its center.

* Meghan makes a face. "Great. Here I was assuming they were all pretend."

* Jaret laughs.

* Meghan shakes her head and smiles. "Well no matter. I have assured the children time and again they are safe here in the city. Please do try and keep it that way."

<Jaret> Oh, I'd never dream of doing otherwise. Have no concerns.

<Meghan> ::nods:: You still have the stone?

<Jaret> Of course I do. I don't lose gifts so easily.

<Meghan> Good. At least I can keep track of you a little.

<Jaret> Oh? Is that what that little rock can do? And here I thought it was simply my most favorite handwarmer. ::he grins::

<Meghan> ::smirks:: You go right ahead and keep on thinking that.

<Jaret> But how can I, now that you've revealed one of its hidden purposes to me? I find myself compelled to wonder what other surprises lie in wait for me.

<Meghan> No other hidden purposes, I promise. It simply gives something of value to each of us.

<Jaret> I will take your word on it, then. Does that reassure?

* Meghan nods and finishes her tea. "I'm glad you came by. One stop of many I am sure." She looks down in her empty glass and then back to him. "Please be careful."

<Jaret> As much as I can be. Being careful and being successful are too often antithetical to each other. But I will see what is possible.

* Meghan nods. "Just come back alive."

<Jaret> Well, of course! Such a thing needs not be spoken, it should be understood.

* Meghan looks him over critically a moment and nods.

<Jaret> Do I pass muster?

* Meghan stick her tongue out at him, then smiles fondly. "I know I know. I act much to much like your mother. I am sorry."

* Jaret smiles. "Not precisely what I was thinking, but I suppose it will do." He finishes his tea.

<Meghan> ::raises an eyebrow:: What precisely were you thinking?

* Jaret grins maddeningly. "And now I have a secret. I suppose I should be going. Have a pleasant evening, Meghan. The weather is quite nice."

* Meghan frowns playfully and shakes her head. "Meanie."

* Jaret bows. "I prefer to think of it as roguish charm."

* Meghan stand and collects his glass, shaking her head a bit. "If you say so."

<Jaret> Indeed I do.

* Meghan takes the glasses to the kitchen and then returns with a light cloak. "Well come keep me company walking over to the Hall. Ok?"

<Jaret> Of course. ::he offers her his arm::

* Meghan places her hand lightly on his arm and heads out.
