* Dawn and Dusk are in the somewhat grungy office from which they conduct most of the guild's day-to-day routine. The occupation of Arabel has caused a lot of scurrying on the seamy side of town - the massive reduction in the numbers of well-trained Purple Dragons has caused an increase in criminal activity. On the other hand, it also interrupted the carefully-negotiated system of bribes.

* Dawn is sitting at the desk, his boots propped on its top, while Dusk sits across the room, tossing darts at a target over Dawn's shoulder.

* Bienca lounges on one of the lumpy, none-too-clean sofas. "We've got more self-starters out there than I can shake a stick at. *I* ran into a competitor last night. *Me*."

<Dawn> Were they any good?

<Bienca> Not particularly... and very rude. I would have been willing to negotiate, but I won't do it once someone starts throwing nasties at me. ::sighs:: He went for a swim.

<Dusk> {You're turning nasty... I like that.} ::he grins evilly::

* Jade knocks the pass pattern on the door.

<Dawn> Too bad. We could use a few more good- ::glances up at the knock:: Come!

* Bienca reaches into her vest and pulls out a wicked-looking five-point throwing knife. "I had six of these coming at my head before I could blink. It's good he threw them all at once, I suppose."

* Jade opens the door and walks in, making an obvious effort to stomp on the stairs so they can hear her coming.

* Dusk checks his last throw, then comes over to take the throwing knife from Bienca for examination.

* Jade enters the room and looks around, "Someone throwing things at you Bienca?"

<Bienca> ::grins:: They *were*. I asked them to stop.

* Dawn reaches into the desk and pulled out a simple canvas pouch, which clinks rather expensively. He tosses it to Jade. "Good job."

* Jade nods and tosses a different bag of coins on the desk, "Tippler forgot part of his tithe."

<Dawn> ::raising an eyebrow:: "Forgot"?

* Dusk throws Bienca's knife at his target, and sneers at its balance. He pulls it out of the wall and hands it back to Bienca.

* Bienca tucks the throwing star back into her vest.

<Jade> ::shrug:: That's what he said when I asked him why his tithe seemed so small when he's been impersonating Lord Marcus at state functions. Apparently Lord Marcus doesn't want anyone to know about his extra-marital activities.

<Dawn> Oh, *really*? ::grins:: That's nice to know. Holding out on us, is he? You didn't hurt him too bad, did you? ::hefts the bag:: Lord Marcus apparently pays well. I'd hate to lose the income.

<Jade> ::looking both innocent and indifferent:: Let's just say that if you're going to visit Tippler any time in the near future you should wear your worst footwear.

<Dawn> ::raises his eyebrows again::

<Jade> ::shrugs:: I didn't lay a finger on him but I don't think he's going to regain bladder control for a while.

<Dawn> ::snorts and drops the bag into a drawer:: Haven't seen any likely talent while you've been out, have you? It'd be a great time to raise a crop, with all the fucking Dragons out of town.

<Jade> ::snort:: The most promising I've run across were trying to rob my favorite restaurant. And I only put them above the rest of the riff-raff since they were intelligent enough to chose a shop the Dragons don't really care about.

<Dawn> Ah, well... ::he shrugs:: They're already enlisting volunteers to do Dragon duty while the real Dragons are off getting themselves chopped to bits by orcs. You might keep an eye open and see if any of them might be bribeable.

* Bienca shifts seductively on the couch. "I might enjoy that..."

<Jade> 'Fraid I can't. The real reason I stopped by today was to tell you I'm going to be out of town. Probably for as long as it takes the Dragons to take care of matter with the orcs.

<Dawn> ::flashes Bienca a grin:: I'm sure you would.

<Dawn> ::glares up at Jade:: Fuck that. We're already short-handed, and things are popping with the Dragons gone.

<Bienca> ::raises one eyebrow:: You don't seem the type to enlist, Jade.

<Jade> If it was just orcs I'd let the Dragons handle it, it's their job after all. Do you all remember the job I did before I started with you all?

<Dawn> Nope. We don't ask about the past.

<Jade> Alright, I'll tell you. The reason I originally agreed to take this job, and the reason I was gone for a few weeks right at the start of it was because the Star Walker needed a hundred dots. Several of us thought that working together we could raise the money in a reasonable time. Then we found out about a dragon that had been attacking caravans. So we went after the dragon's horde.

<Dawn> ::holds up a hand:: Stop. Stop right there.

<Jade> Yes?

<Dawn> You're asking for time off to go chasing dragons? *Again*?

<Jade> No. I'm taking time off to go to the Abyss to steal a dragon slaying sword from a dracolich so that Azoun can kill the dragon leading the orc army in Arabel.

* Bienca blinks. "And we do like fish and chips."

* Dusk flashes a quick few signs to Dawn, who laughs.

<Dawn> Yeah... ::to Jade:: You know, usually they just tell us they've got a sick mother, or someone's after their head, or something.

<Jade> ::grins:: I don't even know where my mother is, and I don't think there are many people outside of this room that would even think of coming after my head.

<Bienca> ::eyes Jade:: Nah, I wouldn't want it...

<Jade> Though if it makes you feel better the dracolich in question will be coming after my head sooner or later. I suppose I could wait and let her come to Marsember to find me.

<Dawn> ::grins back:: Not many. But okay, it's a hell of a story. Whatever you're doing, it's no skin off my nose, as long as you're not trying to set up behind my back. Who's taking your place while you're gone?

<Jade> ::shrug:: Who do you trust to do it? Angel and Geremi are the most skilled, but Geremi looks to be slowing down with age and I don't know if Angel would be willing to leave Jewel alone long enough to do the job.

<Dawn> That's a temporary replacement. Tell me who should take your place if you don't come back.

<Jade> ::stands silently for several moments:: Quarters or Bow. Quarters is more intimidating, but tends to get carried away. Bow can handle silencing people discretely, but he's not very good at threatening.

<Dawn> Good. ::he grins:: Think about it while you're gone. If you come back, you're going to take one of them on and make him your second so we don't have to have this conversation again.

<Bienca> ::laughs:: I'd suggest Bow. He listens...

<Jade> If I'm going to take a second I'd rather start with one of the Children. Fewer bad habits that I'll have to break.

<Dusk> ::to Bie:: {Maybe you should volunteer for the job. You've been getting bloodthirsty...}

<Bienca> ::snorts:: I have too much work to do already...

<Dawn> ::shakes his head:: None of the Children are on that track right now, and I won't have them pushed. Though I'll let you know if I find someone with promise.

<Jade> ::nods:: They'd turn out like Quarter if we pushed them into it.

<Dawn> ::nods:: Think about it. You'll have some time, it sounds like. ::grins::

<Jade> ::nods:: I will. Anything else?

<Dawn> When are you leaving?

<Bienca> ::tucks her hands under her head and looks up at the ceiling:: Bring me a souvenir?

<Jade> Not sure yet. I can be ready to leave tomorrow, but I don't know how long it's going to take everyone else to get ready. Not before next week at the least. One of my travelling companions is throwing an invitation only party at the House of the Purple Scarves before she leaves. I can get you invitations, but I have to warn you, there'll be people there who'll recognize you from last year.

<Jade> ::nods to Bie:: I'll see what I can do.

<Dawn> ::shakes his head:: Tempting as it sounds, I'd rather not be recognized.

<Bienca> ::adds her agreement to Dawn's:: We had enough trouble with that *last* year.

<Jade> ::nods::

<Dawn> That's all, then.

<Jade> Alright. I'll check in when I get back. Try not to get caught while I'm gone. ::smiles before turning to head for the door::

<Dawn> ::snorts::

<Bienca> ::looks vaguely offended::

<Jade> ::Jade can be heard heading up the stairs and outside::

<Dawn> ::snorts:: Chasing dracoliches in the Abyss... Woman should start a new career as a storyteller...

<Bienca> ::grins:: I wonder what she'll bring me...
