Getting the Girl

1406

* Rhys wanders in from the kitchen, and heads around the bar for the door. While he's unlocking the door, a muffled yet mighty sneeze can be heard from the second floor. Rhys shakes his head and pulls the door open a crack. "Hall's open!" He returns back behind the bar, the fire in the hearth springing to life, and the wall sconces lighting up as well.

* Loria enters the Hall just ahead of her husband, a blue cloak fastened at her throat. "Don't worry so much, my heart. I'm sure they'll be fine together." She does not, one might note, look especially reassured herself.

<Rhys> Good evening, Loria. Welcome back to the Meade Hall. Can I get you anything?

<Loria> ::smiles:: Good evening, Rhys... some lemonade would be lovely, if you've any.

* Kevil enters, holding the door open for Loria. He is warmly dressed, in shades of green and cream. There are circles under his eyes, but his smile is wide. "If you say so, raindrop." He bows to greet Rhys.

* Loria unhooks her cloak and hangs it up before taking a seat at the bar.

<Rhys> Master Bard. Anything for you? ::he plucks a mug off the bar, dunks it upside down somewhere around the taps, coating the lip in blonde sugar granules, and then filling it with lemonade.:: It's a little tart, so use the sugar as you need, to taste.

* Loria takes a sip. "Oh, this is lovely." She takes a second, longer swallow.

<Kevil> Hot cider, if you would be so good, Master Rhys. ::he takes the stool next to Loria's::

* Lisl strolls in, pausing at the door and involuntarily glancing up as another sneeze vibrates the rafters. "Evening, Rhys. Mug of meade, please?"

<Rhys> Of course, Master Bard, Lisl. ::fixes Kevil a hot cider, with stick of cinnamon, and Lisl a mug of meade:: Here you are. Enjoy.

<Kevil> ::looks up with a grin:: Lisl!

<Lisl> Loria! Kevil. You're back? ::taking a seat at the bar:: So soon?

* Loria smooths the front of her dress, pulling a bit at the bodice, which seems a little tight. "Lisl! Hello!"

* Adam ducks to fit through the doorway before heading towards the bar, "Good evening everyone. Mug of meade please Rhys."

<Rhys> Evening, Adam. Coming right up. ::he fetches another mug, picks the tap out of the forest, and pours a mug of meade:: Here you are.

<Lisl> Everything... uh... come out alright? ::glancing around, as if expecting to see a baby basket hiding behind a stool somewhere::

* Adam sips his meade, "Thank you Rhys."

* Loria laughs at Lisl's expression before schooling her features.

<Kevil> ::gives Loria a big, foolish grin::

<Loria> ::nods:: Everything went fine. Diya's looking after them tonight. He practically insisted we go out.

<Kevil> ::nods, laughing:: I think he was tired of us hogging them.

* Adam raises his mug to Loria and Kevil, "Congratulations you two."

* Lisl blinks. "Who?"

<Loria> ::beams at Lisl:: The twins, silly.

<Lisl> ::does a double-take:: Wait... *them*? Twins? But... ::looks around for a stool before remembering she's already sitting down:: there are *two* of them?

* Adam smiles, "Twins was it. Congratulations twice then."

<Rhys> Congratulations! Wonderful news! What are their names?

<Loria> ::smiles at Rhys:: Thank you... we named them Aylin and Shavyl.

<Rhys> Oh, that's quite pretty.

<Loria> ::raises her mug to Adam:: And thank you, Master Adam.

<Lisl> Yes... congratulations. ::shakes her head:: *Two*.

<Kevil> ::to Rhys:: Thank you... Aylin was named for my little sister.

<Loria> ::laughs at Lisl:: Well, at least it wasn't more... I've only two... ::she looks at Rhys and Adam and blushes::

* Adam laughs and has another drink of meade.

* Kevil chuckles into his cider.

<Lisl> Ha! What, are you comparing yourself to the Blessed Mother already? Give yourself time, girl.

* Lisl has a sip of her meade, shaking her head again.

<Loria> ::grins:: Oh, I don't think I'll be nearly that... *blessed*

* Rhys grins quietly.

<Lisl> Better hope not. Your nursemaid wouldn't be too happy with that many diapers. ::grins::

* Kevil eyes Loria speculatively, his eyes twinkling.

<Kevil> ::casts Lisl a grin:: *What* nursemaid?

<Lisl> ::frowns, a little puzzled:: Didn't you just say you'd left them with someone?

<Loria> ::nods:: With Diya... oh! ::she looks wide eyed at Lisl:: I forgot, you haven't *met* Diya, have you?

<Kevil> ::nods:: Diya. Did you not- ::he breaks off, frowning:: No, maybe you did not...

<Lisl> ::blinks:: What's this about? You left for Alanis to have your children... did you come back with a whole household?

<Kevil> ::a small smile lurks behind his cider mug:: Diya is our husband.

<Loria> You should come by and meet him. I'm sure you'd get along... ::she smiles:: He likes outdoorsy things, too.

<Lisl> Your... what?

<Kevil> ::gives Lisl a dry look:: You have even *been* to Alanis.

* Loria laughs. "Anyway, he can talk to birds, and I'm sure he'd be happy to have someone to wander around in the woods with." She shudders. "I'm afraid I'm just a city girl at heart."

<Lisl> ::gives Kevil an irritated look of her own:: Aye, and I've been to Khymrych, too.

<Kevil> ::grins and shrugs:: Husband. Circle-mate. ::he repeats the word in Alani for her, his grin even bigger::

<Lisl> ::shakes her head disbelievingly:: And Loria... hells... does your, ah, Mother know?

<Loria> Um... ::she colors:: The Blessed Mother knows... but my father suffered a stroke a few months back, and we thought it might be best for his health not to mention it at home.

<Lisl> Oh.

* Lisl picks up her mug, stares at it for a moment, and puts it down, pushing it back towards Rhys. "Rhys, could I get a mug of 'kick, please?"

<Rhys> Of course, Lisl. ::he fetches a fresh mug and fills it with mulekick.:: To your health.

<Lisl> Yours. Thanks. ::hefts the mug and takes a long swallow::

* Loria exchanges a long look with Kevil, then shrugs and has some more of her lemonade.

* Kevil looks amused more than anything else. He has another swallow of cider.

* Adam finishes his meade, "Could I please have another Rhys?"

<Rhys> Of course, Adam. ::pours the giant another mug of meade::

* Adam sips his meade, "Thank you Rhys."

<Kevil> I *do* think you would like him, Lisl. You liked most of the Rangers you met, while you were in Alanis, if I remember correctly.

* Lisl drinks silently, her expression akin to someone who's just been whacked in the side of her head by a falling log.

<Lisl> Hmm? Oh... aye. ::nods and has another drink::

* Loria looks at Kevil and says in an undertone, "Gee, of all people, I didn't think *she* was the one who was going to flip her lid."

* Kevil gives Loria a wry, perplexed smile and shrugs.

* Luana opens the door and looks into the room before entering. She is tall and fair skinned with long blonde hair braided down her back. She is wearing boots, well worn brown leggings and a dingy white tunic edged with embroidered upturned swords. On her back she has a pack with a large sword strapped to it.

* Lisl gives no indication of having overheard, and has another swallow of 'kick. "Rhys? You wouldn't have any food back there, by chance, would you?"

* Luana walks cautiously toward the bar.

<Rhys> I imagine I could rustle something up, Lisl. ::to the newcomer:: Good evening. I'm Rhys Altain, barkeep tonight. What can I get you?

* Kevil looks up as the door opens and offers the newcomer a cordial nod and a smile. "Good evening, Lady."

* Lisl gives Luana a brief up-and-down before returning her attention to her drink.

* Loria nods politely to Luana. "Good evening."

* Luana stops for a second then responds, "Might you have a room for the night?" Then as an after thought she adds, "and a strong ale."

* Adam turns at the new comers entrance and has some more meade.

* Lisl glances up as another loud sneeze echoes from above.

<Rhys> We have some rooms free, yes. ::he pours a dark brown ale into a mug and hands it over:: There you are. If you'll excuse me a moment, I have duties in the kitchen pressing.

* Adam looks at the ceiling, "I hope she's better soon. Hate to lose some of the extra orders I took when I hired her."

* Luana politely studies the people she is currently sharing the common room with.

* Kevil extends a hand to the stranger. "Kevil Talarin, Master Bard, at your service, my lady..." He indicates Loria. "My wife, the Priestess Loria."

<Loria> ::smiles:: Welcome to the Meadehall...

* Adam nods his head, "Adam Rutile, smith and mason."

* Luana nods "Luana Valkoda"

* Lisl nods briefly. "Lisl Ferinsdottir."

* Rhys comes back from the kitchen with a steaming hot meat pie. "It's not much, but it's what was available." He sets it on the counter, and pulls some plates and eating utensils out from underneath. "Anyone besides Lisl interested?"

* Loria sniffs. "Oh, that smells lovely, Rhys. Could I have a slice?"

<Adam> No thank you Rhys. ::sips his drink::

<Kevil> None for me, thank you. ::he peers into his mug:: But I will have more cider, when you have a moment to spare it.

<Lisl> Thanks, Rhys. ::picks up the knife and inspects the edge before cutting out a moderate portion, glancing at Loria, and cutting a second of the same size.:: Rhys? Eating your own cooking this evening? ::she holds up the knife.

<Rhys> Oh, I don't eat meals while I'm on duty, just snacks. But thank you.

* Loria takes her slice. "Thank you, Lisl."

<Lisl> ::half-grins and wipes the blade on the edge of the pan before setting it down and taking up a fork instead::

* Luana nervously fumbles with something hanging on a chain from around her neck and glances at the door.

* Kevil casts Luana another look. "What brings you to us, if I may be so bold?"

* Rhys picks a key off a hook behind the bar and sets it by Luana. "You'll be in 5, if that's all right. Everything to your liking?"

* Lisl digs into the meat pie, darting a brief, puzzled frown at Loria before taking a bite.

* Luana takes the key from the bar. "Thank you." Turning toward Kevil "I have been traveling for several months. I am looking for my foster brother. I was hoping I might find some clue here in this city."

<Kevil> It is a big city in which to search for one man... Does your brother have a name?

<Luana> Josip

* Luana begins to relax slightly and removes her pack from her back to a nearby table with a loud clanging.

* Rhys frowns slightly. "The trading season will start quite soon, I'd imagine. Strangers of all kinds will be coming to Marsember, with news from far off places. If you don't find him immediately, you might want to remain here for a while, and see if news of him comes to you."

* Adam sips his drink.

<Kevil> ::frowns slightly in thought, shaking his head:: I can not say that I am familiar with the name, myself... But I wish you luck, Lady."

* Luana nods graciously at Kevil. "Thank you"

<Lisl> ::shakes her head:: Sorry, not heard the name before, either. What's he do?

* Loria nibbles at her meat pie, turning her fork absently.

* Luana turns her head toward Lisl "He fights...rather poorly sometimes, other times quite well."

* Kevil reaches over Loria's fork to snitch a bit of her pie.

<Lisl> Fights... professionally? A guard, then, or a mercenary?

<Luana> Most likely, that seems the sort of work he would take.

* Loria frowns and swats at Kevil's hand with her fork.

<Lisl> Street of Steel's where you want to look, then. ::glances at Loria and Kevil's little altercation before returning her attention to Luana:: You don't want to be headed down there now, though. In the morning, when they're open for business.

* Kevil grins and pops his filched bit of pie into his mouth with a wink.

<Loria> You are incorrigible, my heart... ::she sticks her tongue out at him::

<Rhys> Master Bard, would you like a slice of pie?

* Luana looks at Lisl with an odd look. "Whats wrong with right now?"

* Loria mimics Kevil's voice. "Not at all, Sir Rhys. I will just have some of Loria's."

<Kevil> Oh, no thank you, Master Rhys! I am certain Loria's tastes far better. ::he grins at Loria unabashedly::

* Adam chuckles and sips his meade.

* Rhys turns back to send some empty mugs tottering to the kitchen, muttering something that sounds vaguely like "pie hat."

<Lisl> ::shrugs a shoulder and glances out the window:: They'll have been drinking for about four hours already, now. Less of a hassle when you don't have to pull them up by the hair to see their faces. Or... well, less of a hassle all around.

<Kevil> ::giving Loria an exaggeratedly worried look:: You would not do such a thing, would you, n'shava?

* Luana laughs quietly. "I am quite use to pulling drunken men out of a stupor."

* Loria blinks innocently at Kevil, batting her eyelashes. "Would you *deserve* it, my heart?"

<Kevil> But of course not! I ask only to sit at your feet and gaze adoringly into your eyes... bate my breath upon your least word... feed upon your discarded crumbs... ::he snitches another bit of pie while still managing to look absurdly worshipful::

<Lisl> ::grins:: Well, no skin off my nose if you're in a rush. Street of Steel's a right out the door, one block over, then fifth street to the left. ::points:: Tell them Lisl sent you and you're less likely to get hit on. Or not, your choice again, miss.

* Lisl glances at Kevil again and snorts. "Bards."

* Kevil winks at Lisl.

* Lisl looks away and has another swallow of 'kick.

* Luana takes a drink of her ale.

* Loria sighs, and pushes her pie at Kevil. "Here, you have it. I'm not hungry anymore."

* Kevil harrumphs. "You take all the fun out of it..."

<Rhys> Where did you last see your brother, miss?

<Luana> A small town by the name of high moon.

* Adam finishes his meade, "Could I have another please Rhys?" Turning to Lisl, "Lisl, if you have the chance could you stop by my shop? I'm trying to make some weapons for Felice and we can't come to any sort of agreement over the design. I was hoping that you might be able to work something out."

<Rhys> Of course, Adam. ::pours him another meade::

<Lisl> Weapons? ::frowns a little:: Um... sure, if you think I can help.

<Luana> ::to Rhys:: It has been a long day, is there somewhere nearby where I can stable my horse for the night?

<Rhys> Ah, near the Dalelands.

* Lisl finishes her pie and has another swallow of 'kick, swirling it around a little as she peers into the mug.

* Adam shrugs, "If you can't Lisl then no one's going to be able to." Takes a drink from his mug.

<Rhys> About a block down the street, on your left, miss.

<Lisl> Ha. Doubt that... Can't you... talk to her, Adam? I mean, you two used to be so close...

* Luana places some coins on the bar and picks up her pack, "Thank you. Good evening all." She leaves to stable her horse before retiring to her room for the evening.

* Lisl nods to Luana.

<Kevil> Good night, Lady.

<Adam> ::shrug:: I've tried talking to her. The problem as I see it is that she's more interested in style than in practicality. That and she's envious of you.

* Loria snorts derisively.

<Lisl> ::blinks:: Ha. Well... ::glances at the door, waiting until it closes to continue:: it's in her nature. I'm certainly not going to be able to change that any more than you could. ::shrugs:: And you're probably better equipped to put up with it than I am.

* Adam smiles, "Probably, but you can be the voice of experience."

* Loria finishes off her lemonade and stares at the bartop, her chin resting in her hand.

<Rhys> More lemonade, Priestess?

<Loria> No, thank you... ::she sighs::

* Lisl snorts. "Joy." She drains her mug and sets it on the bar, massaging her forehead with both hands. "Alright... um... *not* tonight." She glances sidelong at Loria again. "Maybe... midweek? Lunch?"

<Kevil> ::touches Loria's arm:: N'shava?

* Loria smiles wanly. "Yes, my heart?"

* Adam smiles, "Sounds good. Hopefully I'll be able to get Felice to show up by then."

* Rhys takes Loria's mug away and sends it back to the kitchen, jittering along from the sugar still on its rim.

<Lisl> Best of luck to you. If you can't, send a message around to my place, we'll figure something else out. Um. ::considers her empty mug a little blankly::

<Kevil> ::he looks slightly worried, but smiles faintly:: Do you think perhaps they miss us, yet?

* Loria glances once at Lisl. "They're probably asleep, or eating great mouthfuls of Diya's hair. In either case, we can go, if you'd like. I think I would rather go."

<Lisl> Gods... ::pushes her mug away, muttering half to herself:: Jaret's to blame for this somehow, I know he is... if he survives, I'm going to kill him.

<Rhys> Good night, lady and gentleman. Congratulations again on your children.

* Adam looks questioningly at Lisl.

<Adam> Goodnight Loria, Kevil.

<Loria> Thank you, Rhys... maybe in a few weeks, we'll bring them by... they're quite lovely. They look just like their father.

* Kevil nods and picks up Loria's cloak to drape it over her shoulders. He puts several coins on the bartop and smiles at Rhys. "Thank you. Drinks and pie and all are on us, tonight, d'va?"

* Rhys bows his head. "As you say, Master Bard."

<Lisl> ::shakes her head, waving a hand at Adam:: Never mind. ::looks up distractedly:: Good night, Loria, Kevil. Yes... congratulations again. And never mind, I'll get the bill.

<Kevil> ::smiles at Loria:: Except that they inherit their mother's beauty.

* Kevil bows to the room at large. "Good night, friends." He opens the door and slips his arm around Loria's shoulders as he follows her out.

* Loria follows Kevil out of the meadehall.

* Rhys smiles genially at Lisl. "It looks like you'll get next week's tab."

<Lisl> ::makes a face:: Guess so. ::sighing, and staring at the bartop::

* Rhys picks a copper piece out of Kevil's coins and nudges it over to Lisl. "For your thoughts?"

<Lisl> ::grins wryly, accepting the coin and spinning it idly:: No one's ever really who you think they are, are they, Rhys?

<Rhys> All depends on who they are, and who you think they are, I suppose. And people change, as well. A more interesting question is how long do people stay who they are?

<Lisl> Heh. ::glances at the door again, stopping the coin's spin with a swat of her hand:: Depends on the person, I suppose. All depends on the person... ::shakes her head:: or... whatever.

* Rhys smiles. "Something to think about. Or not, as you choose."

<Rhys> In any case, I forgot to say so earlier, but last call.

<Lisl> ::snorts:: It's so much easier in the woods.

* Lisl nods. "I'm done." She slides off her chair and pushes the copper back towards Rhys. "Thanks, Rhys."

* Rhys sighs. "I suspect none of this is easy. You're welcome, Lisl. It's good to see you around again."

<Lisl> Not certain everyone would agree with you, but... thanks. ::glances over:: See you, Adam. 'Night.

* Adam finishes his drink, "Thanks for the hospitality Rhys. I'll see you midweek Lisl."

<Rhys> Any time, Adam. Nice to see you around, too.

* Adam heads out the door.

* Lisl waves and follows Adam out slowly, head down.

* Rhys heads to the door behind the duo and locks it behind them. He turns and looks at the pie plate on the bar, which has started to casually mosey off. "Oh, no. You're dinner." He sits down at the bar and begins to savor forkfuls.
